However you plan to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend by commemorating veterans, celebrating graduations, hosting backyard BBQ’s or enjoying the outdoors, Golden is the place to do it!

Honor veterans at the Annual Memorial Service ceremony at the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial, at the intersection of Highways 6 & 40 in Golden. This U.S. Marine Corps Memorial was Golden’s first community landmark approved by the Golden City Council; it was dedicated in 1977 to Marines of all eras and was envisioned and brought to reality through the leadership of the late S/Sgt. Cyrus “Bo” Bowers of Golden. Interestingly, there is a time capsule located 20 feet below the Memorial surface and it contains memorabilia from dignitaries from 1976. The time capsule is scheduled to be retrieved in 2076.

Memorial Day weekend also means the opening of Golden’s Splash Waterpark. The Splash at Fossil Trace is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. and is the largest water park in Jefferson County and the 4th largest in Colorado. Splash Water Park Features two large body & tube water slides, a bustling leisure pool complete with play structure, small water slides, spray fountains, and a 500 gallon dump-bucket, a beach-like sand area fun for all ages – bring your buckets and shovels, a gentle spray fountain play area for young children ages 1-100, a lap pool with diving board, and lounge chairs, picnic tables and shaded structures surround the pool area.

Looking for something different to do during the long weekend? Golden’s original visitors came looking for gold and adventure and they still do! Recreational “mining” is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the U.S. today. Approximately 3 million gold pans are sold annually in the U.S. alone. Trying your luck at panning could lead to a fascinating and enjoyable hobby. The gamble of taking a pan full of material and finding precious metal, whether a flake or laden with nuggets, is a sensation that is unexplainable.  Gold panning is a fun and educational activity for every family member.  Gold -N- Detectors, Denver’s only dedicated metal detecting and prospecting center is located in historic Golden, Colorado and they will provide all the equipment you need for you to enjoy this very laid back and relaxing adventure.

Looking to be outdoors for the day. Why not try trail running or mountain biking? Golden has 253 acres of parks, 24 miles of trails and 402 acres of open space. Experience the mountains without the hassle of driving to the mountains!
