For 60 years, the Colorado Railroad Museum has offered visitors the opportunity to experience the thrill of railroading and learn about its important role in Colorado history. Railroad Museum TrainTo celebrate its 60th Anniversary on July 13-14, the museum will stage something that has only been done once before:  a parade of locomotives.  Engines 346 and 491 will be bellowing steam and blowing whistles as they circle the museum’s half-mile circle of track.  The museum has more than 100 locomotives, diesels and cars that will be on display.  There will be train rides every half hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Sat. July 13 and Sun. July 14, as well as Roundhouse Tours. All model railroads will also be up and running for this special, one-of-a-kind event.

Heading to Red Rocks? Make Golden Your Pre-Concert & Post-Yoga Headquarters

Golden Rule Red Rocks AdRolling Stone Magazine said it best. When they named Red Rocks Amphitheatre the No. 1 outdoor concert venue in North America, they wrote: “With the exception of Madison Square Garden, no U.S. venue of this size has such an amazing pedigree: The Beatles in 1964, Jimi Hendrix in 1968, Bruce Springsteen in 1978, and so many more.”

Any concert under the stars at Red Rocks is unforgettable, not to mention early morning Yoga on the Rocks, hiking the new Geological Overlook Trail that offers spectacular views or simply running the steps at the world’s best concert venue. And to make your Red Rocks visit even better, begin or end it in nearby Golden, Colorado.

Located only a 15 minute drive from Red Rocks, Golden is the perfect stop before a concert or after yoga or a hike.  Red Rocks will offer more than 162 events and concerts in 2019, but the park is open every day with three amazing hiking trails that wind through, up and over the 200 million year old rocks, with great interpretation of the geological history found here.  When you want to stay close to Red Rocks, check out the new Origin Hotel – the official hotel of Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Hampton by Hilton Denver West/Golden or the Holiday Inn Express & Suites.

You can also stay downtown at the Golden Hotel, the Table Mountain Inn or at The Dove Inn, Golden’s modern bed & breakfast. Or just visit for a relaxing dinner before the show or an after Yoga on the Rocks brunch.

Craft Brew BeerAnother reason to visit Golden before a concert is that it has become the beer brewing capital of the world.  Coors Brewery is the largest single brewing site on the planet and Golden has seven other craft breweries nearby.  Golden is also home to award-winning distilleries, including Golden Moon and State 38, where you can enjoy a finely crafted spirit to get your concert groove on.

For pre-concert dining or post-yoga brunch, informal, come-as-you-are Golden offers a wide choice:

Abejas Restaurant was recently selected as one of the top fine dining experiences in metro Denver, with a concentration on locally sourced, sustainable products in a relaxing, non-formal atmosphere.

Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza is a local legend with one of the best Western views in town.  It’s known not only for their pizza, but also for the slow wood-fired pulled pork and whiskey sauce sandwiches.

Vice Kitchen +Wine + Whiskey offers phenomenal drinks and dining close to Red Rocks. Favorites include elk medallions, salmon ceviche and bountiful charcuterie and cheese boards.

Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse combines history (it was the first capitol building of Colorado territory, when it was a frontier saloon) with great pub Trailhead Taphouse beer and foodfare and BBQ.

Sherpa House Restaurant & Cultural Center looks like it has been air-lifted from the Himalayas, set in a farm house dotted with artifacts from Nepal.  How better to kick off a night at Red Rocks than with Yak Stew, or sit on the outdoor patio by the splashing fountain after yoga.

Trailhead Taphouse & Kitchen is the place to go if the concert is featuring blues.  They dish out jambalaya, gumbo and craft beers.

At D’Deli (consistently ranked as the No. 1 sandwich shop on the Front Range) you can have a true Colorado evening with a Buffalo ruben or smoked elk sandwich to go and head to a picnic table along the creek.

You’ll also find craft beer and dinner options at Golden City Brewery, Mountain Toad and Barrels & Bottles, all downtown within easy walking distance of each other and an easy 15 minute drive to or from Red Rocks. Of if you prefer to be a bit closer to Red Rocks for your pre-concert sustenance, try Over Yonder Brewery, Golden’s newest brewery – and the closest brewery to Red Rocks, For gluten free Red Rocks patrons, don’t miss Holidaily, which offers award-winning gluten free beer and a perfect start to your concert.

Golden’s Art Walk: Stroll through Natural Beauty to View Two Dozen Public Art Works

Golden, Colorado sits in an area of spectacular natural beauty, surrounded by rocky buttes and evergreen-covered mountains.  But there’s more than nature to this historic town.  On the Clear Creek Trail and up and down Washington Ave. there are more than two dozen public art works, beautiful statues and murals that capture the spirit of the West.

You can pick up a free Golden Public Art Walking Tour Brochure at the Golden Visitors Center (located along the banks of Clear Creek at Washington Ave.) and Rotary Butterfly Statuetake a delightful stroll past these wonderful art pieces.

Golden was the first territorial capital of Colorado, so many of the statues capture the city’s Old West history.  There’s “Howdy Folks” at 10th and Washington that depicts Buffalo Bill Cody with a young child on his shoulders.  The famous frontier scout and showman Buffalo Bill is buried on top of nearby Lookout Mountain, overlooking Golden.

Many people like taking their photo with “The Monarch,” a life-size statue of a buffalo located, appropriately, in front of the Buffalo Rose Bar & Restaurant.  Across the street is “The Cowboy,” depicting a bronco buster with his saddle, while down the block along the creek bank is “Winter Wind on the Mesa,” a colorful life-like statue of a Native American maiden.

Statue along Clear CreekGolden is above all else, a river town with Clear Creek flowing right through the center, and along the Clear Creek Trail, a paved pathway that follows the creek in both directions for several miles, there are statues depicting the creek’s impact on Golden, from statues of kayakers to fishermen, butterflies, and giant cutthroat trout.

It was mining that created Golden, and “The Golden Touch” on Washington Ave. depicts a lucky miner with his burro, the “old timer” clenching a huge hunk of gold in the air.

Today, Golden is the biggest little beer town in the world, producing more beer than anyplace else in the world, and this fact is celebrated with a statue of Adolph Coors, who founded Coors Brewery here in 1873.  Today, Coors is the largest single site brewery on the planet.  The statue can be found directly in front of the Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse, which is located in the building that served as Colorado’s first state capitol.

Finally, it was near Golden that the world’s first dinosaur fossils were discovered, a fact that is remembered with the Triceratops Trail, a one-mile trail from the Colorado School of Mines that winds through Golden offering glimpses of dinosaur footprints and fossils. The trail leads to the Fossil Trace Golf Course, one of the most beautiful public golf courses in Colorado. Several of the holes are located adjacent to Triceratops footprints. In the Fossil Trace club house, you can see a public art statue of a Triceratops head and realize how huge these dinosaurs were.

Golden is also filled with many colorful murals, some of them nearly a block long, depicting natural and historic scenes from the city’s past. And of course, the Foothills Arts Center has special exhibits throughout the year featuring everything from local Colorado artists to internationally famous works by people like Ansel Adams and Toulouse-Lautrec.

After you enjoy your art walk, there are more than two dozen restaurants, breweries, beer gardens and distilleries in Golden, many of them surrounded by large shade trees with creek and mountain views. It’s a colorful way to spend a day, enjoying nature and outdoor art, followed by a craft brew in a pleasant outdoor beer garden.

Springtime in Golden, Colo: Relax & Recreate in Denver’s Closest Mountain Town

Oh, to be in Golden, now that spring is here! For many, it’s the loveliest time of year in this pleasant valley town, that sits along the banks of pretty Clear Creek, surrounded by high rocky buttes to the east and the steep, green, evergreen-covered foothills to the west.

Located only 12 miles from Colorado’s state capitol building, Golden is the first mountain town people encounter when heading west from Denver on I-70 – but it’s a mountain town with a difference. Golden sits at an elevation of just 5,675 feet.  It’s in Golden that all roads start the steep climb into the Rocky Mountains, gaining elevation fast.  And elevation has a huge impact on weather. But Golden can be delightful in spring with beds of tulips, beautiful smelling lilacs, pink cherry trees and wonderful walks on the Victorian backstreets of the historic village, or along the paved hiking and biking path that follows Clear Creek through the center of town.

Here are some ways to enjoy Springtime in Golden:

WALK OR BIKE ALONG CLEAR CREEKClear Creek Path Spring

Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful walks on the Front Range, the paved trail along Clear Creek runs from the center of historic downtown Golden up into Clear Creek Canyon.  Starting April 18, you can check out a FREE bike from the Golden Bike Library and pedal up and down paths along the stream, or just stroll along under a canopy of cottonwoods as the creek meanders up into the rugged canyon.  There are benches, bridges and picnic tables along the way.  Bring your four legged friends, since Golden is a dog-friendly kind of town. In the heart of town, there is the Golden History Park, a historic farm and homestead with buildings from the 1880s, gardens, cherry trees, and a hundred-year-old chicken coop where (if you bring some quarters) kids can feed the chickens.

SHOP, SIP AND PEOPLE WATCH UNDER THE FAMOUS “WELCOME SIGN”

Long before Denver, Golden was the first capitol of the Colorado Territory.  Today, the historic town’s main street is lined with old buildings that have been repurposed into chic restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, art galleries, candy stores, toy stores and recreation outfitters selling gear for climbing, rafting, hiking, skiing, kayaking, and fly fishing. You can’t miss the 1947 welcome arch spanning Washington Avenue that has been saying “Howdy Folks!” to travelers for more than 70 years.  The sign also says, “Where the West Lives,” and you’ll find that to be true in Golden’s many Western wear shops, Native American art galleries and sports stores.  It’s the perfect place to sit at an outdoor café and watch the world go by.

ENJOY A CRAFT COCKTAIL

Of course, Golden is known as the “biggest little beer town in the world.”  Golden produces more beer than any other city on the planet with the world’s largest brewery (Coors Brewery) and six craft breweries, each with dog-friendly outdoor beer gardens.  But did you know that Golden has also become a center for craft distilled spirits?  The Golden Moon Distillery, State 38 Distilling (Colorado was the 38th state), and Ski Bum Rum & Distillery have made Golden as well known for craft whiskey, gin, vodka, bourbon and rum (plus an amazing array of craft cocktails) as it is for beer.  And wine lovers?  Barrels & Bottles has two dozen tap and bottles of wines to match its selection of beers, many of the wines made in ColorTrail runningado. And Indulge is Golden’s chic wine bar and bistro.

TAKE A SPRING HIKE WITH DINOSAURS

You can climb those rocky buttes around Golden in a land once traversed by dinosaurs.  The first fossilized bones of a T-REX were discovered on South Table Mountain, and a short but steep trail can take you to the summit for sweeping views.  North Table Mountain is circled by a five mile trail for hiking or mountain bikes that goes up, over and around the massive rock butte.  Take a detour and you can climb Lichen Peak for undisturbed views or visit an old quarry.  Springtime is wonderful because the surrounding hills turn a brilliant green, and you can spot wildflowers just coming out along the trail. If you want to see more evidence of dinosaurs, try the Triceratops Trail that starts behind the free Geology Museum at the Colorado School of Mines. The trail takes you to see authentic dinosaur tracks and bones imbedded in rock, while the museum also has many dinosaur exhibits.

MEET BUFFALO BILL and REVISIT A BIT OF THE OLD WILD WEST

Buffalo Bill Cody was the most famous army scout, buffalo hunter and showman in the history of the Old West, and (at his request) his grave sits in a spectacular location on top of Lookout Mountain, overlooking Golden.  A museum has many of his hats, outfits, guns and posters from his exciting life, and the view from the deck is incredible, taking in everything from Pikes Peak to Rocky Mountain National Park and all the plains.  You can even see the tent roof of Denver International Airport, nearly 40 miles away.   You can drive to the grave site on the Lariat Loop Trail, a paved road that twists and turns with views in all directions.  Or more fun, park at Windy Saddle along the Lariat Loop and hike to the grave through deep forests of conifers.  The hillsides around Golden are bright green in spring, and the lower elevation makes trails dry and generally snow free.

Colorado Railroad Museum Steam TrainRIDE A STEAM LOCOMOTIVE

Golden is home to the largest collection of historic narrow gauge locomotives and rail cars in Colorado.  One Saturday a month, the Colorado Railroad Museum fires up authentic steam locomotives that chug around a half mile circle of track; on alternative Saturdays, they run a Galloping Goose, a crazy contraption that is a bus welded on to the back of 1920s Pierce Arrow motor car that used to run on Lizard Head Pass.  The museum is fun every day, with gigantic indoor and outdoor model trains and lots of cars and engines to climb aboard and ring the bell – all in a beautiful location in Clear Creek Valley surrounded by rocky buttes.

ATTEND A CONCERT UNDER THE STARS AT RED ROCKS

Golden has the closest hotels to the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, which begins its summer concert series in late spring.  The Origin Hotel in Golden is the official hotel of Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and Table Mountain Inn, the Golden Hotel and the Dove Inn (all in downtown Golden) are just minutes from Red Rocks parking lots or a short drive in an Uber and Lyft.  Staying in Golden adds to the one-of-a-kind Red Rocks experience since you wake up in the morning in a mountain town with possibilities for a refreshing streamside walk, bike ride, or breakfast at one of Golden's famous coffee shops and breakfast spots like the Windy Saddle Café or Sassafras.

ENJOY LIVE THEATRE, MUSIC AND THE ARTS

Golden is an artistic little place with lots of galleries and the Foothills Arts Center, an art museum built in an historic church that has national shows and local shows featuring area artists, photographers and craftsmen working in all mediums.  The gift shop alone is worth a visit for locally made items in a beautiful room of wood, stained glass and natural light.  Golden is also home to the Miners Alley Playhouse, which presents classic dramas, musicals and original productions.  The theatre is located downtown, a short walk from all the village speakeasies, craft cocktail bars, breweries and restaurants, making a full night on the town something easy to do – with free parking!  If you prefer to eat and drink while watching entertainment, check out the Buffalo Rose, which has been an authentic American West saloon since 1859.  Their recently redone stage has state-of-the sound for a variety of local and big name national country and rock acts.

Sherpa HouseDON’T JUST LOOK AT THE MOUNTAINS – LEARN ABOUT THEM!

Golden is one of the major gateways to America’s largest mountain chain – the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.  But it’s also considered to be one of the world’s great mountaineering centers.  Downtown Golden is just minutes from technical climbing in Clear Creek Canyon and Eldorado State Park – places that attract climbers from around the planet.  Both have wonderful spring hiking trails that let you get up close and personal views of these daring athletes.  Golden is also home to the American Mountaineering Museum, the only museum of its kind in the nation, which has exhibits on climbing everything from Colorado’s 54 Fourteeners (peaks that climb to 14,000 feet and above) to Mount Everest and K2.  If you want to learn more about Mount Everest, try dinner at The Sherpa House, an authentic re-creation of a Sherpa farmhouse in Nepal.  You can have yak stew and other dishes from Nepal, while learning about these amazing people who are the best mountain climbers in the world.  Want to learn how to climb yourself?  Earth Treks in Golden is one of the largest indoor climbing rec centers in Colorado with classes on how to rock climb, and Bent Gate Mountaineering in Golden will provide you with all gears, ropes and shoes you need.

Golden is gorgeous any time of year, but head to Golden this spring to relax and recreate. For more info, check out visitgolden.com.
