Stock Show Visitors Are Always Welcome in Golden – “Where the West Lives!”

Since 1949, the huge arch across the main street in Golden, Colorado has proclaimed “Howdy Folks!  Welcome to Golden – Where the West Lives!”  At no time is that more appropriate than when the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo comes rip-roaring into town, Jan. 7-22, 2023.

Golden is just 12 miles west of the National Western Complex in Denver, but a world away in atmosphere.  Walking down Golden’s main street is Buffalo Billlike a stroll back into the Old West with historic storefronts, colorful murals, and covered arcade sidewalks. The most famous character of the West, Buffalo Bill Cody, is buried in Golden, and here you’ll also find Colorado’s largest collection of historic steam locomotives. Right downtown, is the 1878 Pearce Ranch, an authentic homestead with a barn, working blacksmith shop and a chicken coop where youngsters can feed a variety of exotic chickens. And of course, Golden is home to Coors Beer – the largest brewery in the world with tours – and samples.

Here are five things to do in Golden during the Stock Show.

1. Meet Buffalo Bill

Buffalo Bill Cody was the most famous character in the history of the American West, a buffalo hunter, Pony Express rider, and scout for the U.S. Army. Starting in 1883, his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show was performed in more than a thousand cities in 12 different countries. Bill brought along 640 cowboys, Indians, Vaqueros, ropers, trick riders, and sharpshooters, making his show more than 10 times the size of Beyonce’s World Tour. A version of his show takes place at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo every year.

Buffalo Bill was visiting his sister in Denver in 1917 when he died and his funeral on top of Lookout Mountain was the largest in Colorado history. Today, a fun museum near the grave brings his incredible story back to life with costumes, guns, artifacts like Chief Sitting Bull’s headdress, posters and pictures from the show.

The drive to the grave site on top of the mountain begins in historic downtown Golden on the Lariat Loop Trail. This is a white-knuckle thriller, with cliffs on every turn, but the panoramic view from the museum’s outdoor deck takes in everything from snowcapped peaks to the plains and downtown Denver.

Coors2. Tour Coors

Coors is the official beer of the National Western Stock Show. So come on out and see where it all began and is still made! The brewery has a 60-minute, tour of the malting, brewing and packaging of Coors Beer. Reservations are required so be sure to book asap. You get to explore a room full of giant copper kettles and then stop in the packaging room, where thousands of cans and bottles whirl by, marching one-by-one on tread mills to be filled with beer and slotted into six packs. During the tour, those 21 and over can sample three cups of Molson Coors beers. Cowboy Tip: If you already know how beer is made, book the “hospitality lounge,” and head straight to the tasting room for samples and the Coors & Co. gift shop.

Colorado Railroad Museum Train3. Climb Aboard a Steam Locomotive

It was the railroads that won the West and the Colorado Railroad Museum has the largest collection of steam locomotives, private cars, and model trains in the state, all of which offer hands-on experiences.  Climb up into the cab of a locomotive and ring the bell. On Jan. 13 and 20, you can ride the famous Galloping Goose – a 1928 Pierce Arrow limousine put on train wheels with a bus welded on the back. The Galloping Goose once delivered mail over Colorado’s Lizard Head Pass, and it’s a fun ride as it circles the museum on a half mile of track. There’s a huge HO model railroad in the basement, and beginning on Jan. 17 on Saturdays, you can hop on-board a passenger car pulled by a powerful locomotive! Rides depart every 30 minutes 10am-3pm.

4. Enjoy Downtown Golden

There’s no place else on the Front Range of Colorado quite like downtown Golden. Stroll along plank board sidewalks under a covered arcade past historic storefronts that now are filled with outdoor recreation stores, boutiques, art galleries, Western wear, Native American and Colorado made jewelry, toys, ice cream, and candy. Or take a stroll down the paved path that follows Clear Creek up into the mountains. There are six craft breweries in Golden, all with outdoor dog-friendly beer gardens. Golden offers a variety of great restaurants, from the Southwestern ambiance of Table Mountain Inn to mouthwatering bbq at the Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse (housed in the building that served as the first capitol of the Colorado Territory).

5. Take a Wild West Walking History Tour by Golden History Tours

Golden History Tour guides regale tour-goers with true stories from the Wild West, transporting you back to those rough-and-tumble times. Hangings to hijackings, shootouts to showmen, Golden boasts many firsts and some outrageously true Wild West stories. The tour runs through the streets and parks of Golden while your tour guide takes you back to those frontier days and brings Golden's and Colorado's past to life through entertaining storytelling. These tours are family friendly and ADA compliant, and everyone gets a signature Golden Bandana as a souvenir!

Tours run most weekends and some weekdays and can be requested on demand. Check their website for the most up-to-date tour schedule and other options.

While you’re enjoying the National Western Stock Show, make sure to take some time to explore Golden, Colorado, where the West truly lives. From historic tours and hands-on experiences to craft breweries, unique boutiques, and stunning Rocky Mountain foothills scenery, there’s something for everyone in this charming town. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime fan, Golden offers plenty to see, do, and experience just a short drive from Denver.

Start or End your Ski Vacation in Golden, Colorado

There’s nothing quite like a ski vacation in Colorado.  The only challenge can be getting from Denver International Airport to the slopes and back.  Traveling on I-70 to the ski areas requires gaining almost 6,000 feet in elevation, driving through Eisenhower Tunnel (the highest automobile tunnel in the world) and gambling on weather and traffic delays on this often crowded highway.  This can lead to a high stress day after a long flight arriving or with an early flight home.

A simple solution?  Begin or end your trip in Golden, Colorado. View of Golden with Snow

Located conveniently near I-70, Golden is where the mountains meet the plains.  This historic town has the same feeling as a mountain village but is roughly the same elevation as Denver, giving it a much milder year-round climate.

An overnight stay in Golden at the front end of a ski vacation means you can get a fresh start in the morning, beat traffic and can be at the slopes in a little over an hour.  At the end of the trip, you can have a delightful night in Golden with no stress to catch your flight home the next day at nearby Denver International.

Golden is close to Loveland, Eldora, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Vail, Beaver Creek and Winter Park, and offers all the charm of a Rocky Mountain town.

Here’s what to do in Golden during a ski getaway vacation:

Acclimate to the altitude. Before you schuss down those towering peaks, you may want to enjoy a stay at only 5,675 feet. Drink plenty of water, walk the charming town of Golden, and enjoy a relaxing night at one of the town’s hotels.  From wonderful bed & breakfasts like the Dove Inn to downtown hotels like the Southwestern adobe Table Mountain Inn and the creekside Golden Hotel to convenient hotels near I-70 such as the Origin Hotel, Red Rocks, the official hotel of Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and the newest hotel The Eddy, Golden offers a wide variety of accommodations.

Dine out.  Historic Golden is experiencing a restaurant boom. Be sure to check out: the Buffalo Rose with a sprawling bar, concert hall and restaurant; The Golden Mill food hall and community gathering place has indoor seating and outdoor patios with firepits creek side and on the rooftop; and Bella Colibri with rustic elegance and five star Italian cuisine.

old-capital-grill-logo-for-webAmong Golden’s restaurants, you can find everything from farm-to-table fare at Abejas to amazingly popular pizza at Woody’s.  Dine at an authentic farmhouse from Nepal at The Sherpa House, in an Arabian Nights dream at the Ali Baba Grill; or in the first capitol building of the Colorado Territory at the Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse.

Have a beer.  Golden is the biggest little brew town in the world, producing more beer than any other spot on the planet.  In addition to Coors, the largest single site brewery on earth (you can, of course, tour it and sample their products!) there are also nine craft breweries; three craft distilleries; and many tap houses with a full assortment of Colorado craft beer and spirits.

Time your drive to avoid traffic. Spend the night in Golden and get up early to beat the morning rush. Enjoy an amazing latte at Launch or a fresh burrito from Bonfire Burritos. Sitting in traffic on I-70 is a drag so why not avoid it?

Gear up with better deals. You won’t find sky-high resort prices in Golden. So grab those gloves, ski pants, rentals or any missing gear from one of Golden’s ski shops like Powder 7 or Bent Gate Mountaineering.

Visit Golden’s many museums and attractions. Parents can easily break up a long trip with a fun overnight in Golden. Little ones will love a visit to the Colorado Railroad Museum or Buffalo Bill’s Museum & Grave. Browse the best in local art at Foothills Art Center or step back in time at Golden’s History Museum & Park.

Avoid the hectic airport rush. After-ski traffic can be a nightmare. And the only thing worse is when you’re fighting it to try to make a flight. Instead, book your final night in Golden. Walk the creek, enjoy the town and when you’re ready to head to the airport, do so without the stress of mountain traffic.

Settle into your ski vacation or ease out of it with an overnight stay in Golden.

The “Golden” Rule: Take the Kids to See Fall Colors in Denver’s Closest Mountain Town

The historic town of Golden, Colorado is a delightful place to experience annual fall colors. Golden’s spectacular location in Clear Creek Valley, surrounded on one side by treeless volcanic mesas and on the other side by the foothills of the Rockies, makes it the place where the mountains meet the plains. Combine that with one of the prettiest creekside walks in Colorado, and there’s no better place to be this autumn than this historic little city, located just minutes from practically anywhere in metro Denver.

Plus, on the hikes listed below, you’re never too far from civilization—just in case the tiny people in your life meltdown along the way.

Go for the Gold With a Hike

Hike through golden fall colors, then choose a tasty treat from town. Here are some family favorites.

North Table Mountain Trail takes hikers for five miles around North Table Mountain, often with gorgeous cliff views of the Golden Valley. This moderate to advanced trail is easily accessible off of Highway 93 just north of Pine Ridge Road. True, there’s not many trees on this route, but there’s plenty of gold sunshine streaming down on this wild-looking, volcanic mountain of rock. And the views of aspen-covered foothills can’t be beaten. Afterwards, stop at Golden Sweets for ice cream, milk shakes, chocolates, and more.

Clear Creek Trail is Golden’s most popular trail and offers all forms of recreation, from strolling to biking. The paved, mostly level recreational trail stretches from the beginnings of Clear Creek Canyon in the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains, all the way down to the South Platte River in Denver, 19 miles away, offering a tree-lined path with fishing, horseback riding, kayaking – and even gold panning along its banks. But don’t go too far from town; you’re going to want to give Gold Mine Cupcakes a try when you’re finished.

Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve offers the perfect starting point for gentle hiking trails at the top of Golden’s favorite peak. Families can wonder through meadows and achieve great views of both the city and mountains. Little ones love to explore the nature center too. For something sweet after stretching your legs, head for Goozell in downtown Golden for delicious frozen yogurt by the ounce.

Beaver Trail in Golden Gate Canyon State Park starts across from the park’s visitor center and winds its way through aspen groves and open grassy meadows. On this 2.8 mile loop, hikers earn breathtaking views of Indian Peaks and the Continental Divide. A fairly steep hike, the Beaver Trail earns you at least one pastry from Windy Saddle Café—and maybe a latte to boot!

To complement your golden hikes, Golden hosts a handful of great fall events. Some of our favorites include:

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow at Miners Alley Playhouse (Children's Theatre), October 1-29, 2022

Showing Saturdays at 11 am and 1 pm throughout October 2022. If your kiddos haven't yet seen this classic halloween show, now is a great time to take them! In case you don't already know the story, Ichabod Crane has come to Sleepy Hollow to teach, but what he learns there nearly frightens him out of his wits!  Watch as Ichabod learns of the legend of Sleepy Hollow and tries to escape the clutches of the Headless Horseman.

Mines Museum Spooktacular, October 15

Join the Mines Museum for a fun, FREE, blue pumpkin trick-or-treat event. Come in your favorite costumes and enjoy STEM themed hands-on activities (and treats), win prizes, and take pictures with Ms. Colorado herself! Also not to be missed: Mr. Bones, face painting, blaster the burro, and spooky exhibits.

Colorado Railroad Museum’s Harvest Haunt, October 22

Come in costume to enjoy this annual Halloween-themed steam up featuring the Olde Railroaders Silly Graveyard, “not-so-spooky” Haunted Railcars, a hay bale maze, and musical ensembles performing throughout the day in the outdoor pavilion. An authentic, coal burning Colorado steam locomotive will pull trains for this event.

Buffalo Bill’s Grave & Museum: Located high above Golden, on top of Lookout Mountain with spectacular views in all directions is the final resting spot for the Old West’s most famous scout and showman. His “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” toured from 1883 to 1913, performing in more than 1,000 cities in 12 nations with a cast of 640 cowboys, Indians, vaqueros and rough riders.  It took a special train of 52 box cars to move his show around the planet, which included transporting the third largest buffalo herd left on earth.
